Sorry I didn't post my report sooner but things have been a little hectic lately. As most of you probably know, I attended the first annual Long Beach Comic Con this weekend. Phil and I even got to do a panel on Sunday which was basically a gathering for webcomics creators and fans but we had a little mini Q&A session where we announced our new project which will be called Webcomics Advocates of Southern California. The goal of this organization is to bring webcomics fans and creators together to help spread the word about our medium and to help creators network with each other. I'll definitely be posting more about this in the future. You can read the full report on the panel and other goings on over at Brax's blog.
In addition to promoting Brax and attending the panel I also got to see some other really cool stuff. On Friday night Thomas Jane did a screening of his directorial debut, Dark Country, which was shown in 3D and was a very entertaining and captivating movie. It borrowed a bit from Lynch but I think Jane gave the film a very distinctive look and this one is definitely worth watching. Also, Ron Perlman is in it and Ron Perlman is awesome. I had a bit of a negative impression of Thomas Jane after my run-ins with him at San Diego this year but he was really nice to all the fans and signed posters throughout the weekend. He did a special screening of The Mist on Saturday night as well.
On Saturday I spent a lot of time browsing the exhibit hall, which was very easy to navigate and while there was a good amount of people there, it wasn't insanely crowded. It was nice to actually be able to go to the Nintendo booth and play video games with minimal wait time. I got to play the new Professor Layton game and the upcoming Zelda game for DS as well as the Super Mario Bros Wii game, which is really fantastic and finally features real multiplayer simultaneous play. The big event on Saturday was the Robot Chicken/Titan Maximum panel, which was a blast. Seth Green and company have panels down to a science and they just know how to work an audience. My only minor complaint is I wish they had talked a little bit more about Titan Maximum.
Overall I had a fantastic time at the convention and I am already looking forward to next year. It's nice to see a decent sized convention that places such a big emphasis on comics and creators but also has a healthy mix of other aspects of pop culture thrown in. I think things are only going to get better for the convention and everyone involved did a fantastic job!
