List of the Day: How It Was in 1998

The Comedy Feed » 9 Reasons It?s Better To Be A College Freshman Now Than It Was In 1998.

7. We wasted our time looking forward to the Star Wars prequels.

We?d have to wait an entire year before our childhood hopes and dreams were murdered by George Lucas, while Jar Jar Binks shat on their corpse. We didn?t know any better.

Having entered college in 1998, I can say that all these are very true and also made me laugh. Honestly, I don't know what I would add. Maybe that we still had to dial in to get internet. I remember my first year at Biola the nice dorms had just gotten ethernet but the poor kids still had dial-up. I also remember crowding around someone's Macintosh Performa (!) to see a tiny trailer for Episode 1 and thinking it was the greatest thing in the world. Also, the peak of multiplayer gaming was Goldeneye. I can't believe that was TEN years ago.

1998 was my freshman year at Truman, too. We had dial-up and we could only use it for 20 hours per week. Sophomore year we had ethernet in the dorm and Napster. Then I moved off-campus junior year and didn't have broadband again for 4 years.

I used to be awesome at remembering numbers. Now, not so much. The day I got brodband was a magical day.

I started at Cal Poly in 1998 but lived at home so I was still using dial-up. (26.4kbps on a 36k modem) The dorms did have ethernet but no one used it for anything besides AIM. Two years later though I would be on of the first on campus with a wireless 802.11b equipt computer. I spent $200 on a PC Card that was used but it did the trick. I was downloading more music than I knew what to do with through Napster.

And yes, I can't believe kids have Wikipedia today.

I found like 6 CD-ROMS from 2000 that had all the music I downloaded from Napster. Some of it was all right but a lot of it made me embarrassed for my 19 year old self. I just remember finding a user I was getting a really fast connection to and then basically downloading their whole library. Repeat that a few dozen times. Those were crazy times.

Something else from 1998 I remember: being upset about paying $6.25 for a movie ticket so my friends and I started going to the dollar theater.

Yeah, I think cell phones have made us stupid in some ways. I can't remember new phone numbers now to save the life of me, but I still have my last five home phone numbers memorized and even some of my old friends' numbers.
